Updated Toyota Cylinder Head Design
This replacement is based on the later updated cylinder-head design used for Toyota 3L engines equipped with bucket-and-shim valve adjustment.
Toyota cylinder head references include:
11101-54130 → 11101-54131
The later replacement design superseded the earlier cylinder-head version and is commonly used when rebuilding compatible late-model Toyota 3L engines.

Important – Head Gasket Selection
The correct cylinder-head gasket must be selected for your engine.
Toyota used different gasket specifications and thicknesses depending on application. Do not automatically order a head gasket based only on the appearance of the cylinder head.

Common Signs of Cylinder Head Failure
A damaged or cracked diesel cylinder head can produce symptoms including:
- Engine overheating
- Coolant being pushed into the expansion tank
- Unexplained coolant loss
- Cooling system becoming excessively pressurized
- Heater suddenly blowing cold while the engine is hot
- White exhaust smoke
- Coolant entering the combustion chamber
- Repeated overheating under load
Continued operation with a failed cylinder head can result in additional engine damage.
Fix the Cause of the Original Failure
Installing a new cylinder head without correcting the original cause of overheating can result in another cylinder-head failure.
Before installation, we strongly recommend thoroughly inspecting the entire cooling and fuel system.
Items that should be inspected and, where necessary, replaced include:
- Radiator
- Fan clutch
- Cooling fan
- Fan shroud
- Thermostat
- Water pump
- Upper radiator hose
- Lower radiator hose
- Heater hoses
- Radiator cap
- Fuel injectors
- Timing belt and related timing components
The engine block deck should also be checked for flatness and damage before the new cylinder head is installed.
